Term 3, Week 10, 22nd September 2022
Principal Message
We have had a fantasic end to term 3! I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the students for all of their hard work this term, to the teachers for all of their hard work and to the parents and carers for their ongoing support of St John's.
This week we held a really special event - the Celebration of Writing. Throughout Semester two we have a strong writing focus, as outlined in our School Improvement Plan (below). The Celebration of Writing was an opportunity to celebrate the amazing progress that every student has made this term. The teachers selected categories for judging and the pieces of writing were judged by a panel including myself and staff from the Lismore Catholic Schools Office. Thank you to the members of the community who were able to join us. I'm sure you will agree with me that all the writing that was on display was nothing short of spectacular and congratulations to those students who won the category awards.
I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyabe holiday break and I will see you when term 4 begins on Monday 10th October.

What happens when things go wrong in the classroom at St John’s?
At St John’s we have a ‘restorative approach’ to discipline. By that I mean that our processes and procedures are shaped and designed to support children self-regulate and repair problems when they occur. Given the right support we can learn from our mistakes and develop new strategies and ways of being so as to avoid making the same mistake in the future. This learning around self-regulation and making good choices is learning for life.
The classroom ‘behaviiour correction procedure’ is one of key restorative tools at St John’s. It ensures that the optimum learning environment is maintained whilst providing support and prompts for children to self-regulate if they are not following the school code and agreed class rules. The ‘correction procedure’ is the same in every room. Children benefit enormously from this consistent approach.
The correction procedure is a stepped process that prompts children to develop within themselves the capacity to manage their own behaviour. Importantly in this respect it is promoting an internal rather than external locus of control.
The correction plan below is implemented by the teacher if a child is not adhering to the class code or agreed expectations for learning behaviours.
If you have any questions about the ‘correction code’ and how it works please contact me and I will be happy to chat with you.

St John's Photo Competition
We are running a photo competition.
The theme is 'Creativity' – Hit me with your best shot.
In the theme 'Creativity' we are looking for out-of-the-box thinking (anything goes) and there are no rules or guidelines. The challenge is to experiment and intentionally capture a moment or object by doing something different.
Photos can be submitted via the school email address - sjpmull@lism.catholic.edu.au and are due by Friday 28th October with the winners announced in the Week 4 newsletter.
Happy snapping!
LIONS RECYCLE FOR SIGHT
Lions club of Brunswick Mullumbimby is asking the school communites in our shire to help them give the gift of sight. They are collecting used prescription glasses, magnifier glasses and sunglasses (withoutcase) during October. Each pair of glasses will be refurbished and a person in a developing country will be able to see thanks to that donation. The gfit of sight is the most precious need of children and adults throughtout the world. Become part of the greatest present an Australian can give - NEW SIGHT.
Please drop glasses into the school office during October for collection.
Please ask students and staff to collect glasses from family, grandparents, friends, neigbours for our lions eye glasses recyling project. Ask children to not take granny's glasses whilst she is having a nanna nap

FAMILY CONNECT - The Lunch Box: snack sized tips with Lisa
Why should self-care be a priority for families?
Practising self-care can make you feel happier and more physically, mentally, and emotionally able to deal with life’s pressures and stresses. For busy, hectic families, ensuring self-care is a priority makes sense, as it helps parents be better carers. It also a way to role model positive behaviour which children adopt and benefit from into adulthood.
What self-care works for you?
Self-care is different for everyone – you might have to work together to figure out the best options for each of you. Ask everyone to think about these questions individually:
- What activities make you feel good and recharged?
- What would you like to do more of?
- Are there any activities that you look forward to during the week?
- What would your ideal day look like? What activities would you do?
Think low budget or free. This is about filling hearts with joy, not emptying your bank account.
Carve out time for individual self-care
Self-care adds up like coins in a jar – every 5 or 10 minutes accumulates for good. If you think you’re too busy for self-care, it’s likely that self-care is exactly what you need.
Use ‘free time’ better. Social media scrolling and binge-watching TV can sap your soul. Free up a bit of that time for your happy stuff.
Commit to a routine and make it a priority: Have the attitude that self-care activities are the last to be dropped from the schedule, not the first.
If you’re looking to create a happier, healthier family, you might consider reaching out to our Family Connect worker Lisa.
Lisa is at St John’s each Monday. You can contact her on 0429 441 518 or email her lisa.wood@socialfutures.org.au
